Had to be up early for a 9.30am flight to Lima. Fabio escorted us to the airport but he wouldn't be coming with us as he was going to Arequipa with the others. It was sad saying goodbye after all the time we'd spent together. We gave him a decent tip (not sure he deserved it) and told him not to blow it on alcohol! But knowing him, he probably did.

Fabio had warned us that Lima is always grey and overcast due to the pollution. And it was. The traffic was also horrendous and the drivers crazy. There appeared to be no rules. Whatsoever.

Lynn and I checked into our hotel then went on a reccy of the old town. The main plaza was quite nice, with colonial palaces and churches all painted cat sick yellow. (I'm not selling the place very well, am I?)


We then took a mad cab to Miraflores (the posh area down by the sea front) where we excitedly found a Starbucks. 

Had a look round the shops then took a little walk along the promenade before returning back to the old town for dinner.
Miraflores Lima Peru Just off the main square (Plaza Mayor) of the old town were lots of cobbled side streets with open air, cafes, restaurants and bars so after a short look round we managed to find a little place serving traditional Peruvian food (and Piscos!) For a set price of about GBP6 per head I had ceviche (marinaded raw fish) to start, followed by catfish and tacu-tacu (mashed up rice and beans), a Pisco sour and a coffee. You could choose either coffee or ice-cream. Now thats what I call good value!

After our meal we noticed our waiter serving someone a bright green cocktail so we asked what it was. Apparently, it was a drink made with camu-camu (why do they say everything twice in Peru?) an Amazonian berry rich in anti-oxidents, good for depression, anti-viral etc and containing 40 times the amount of vitamin C as a kiwi fruit. "Ooooooh, let's try one of those!" I suggested.
When it came, we took one sip and pulled a face. It tasted like fruit juice mixed with TCP! No wonder, it's anti-viral. We thought maybe the barman had made a mistake i.e added cleaning fluid instead of the Amazonian fruit but no, that's how it's supposed to taste the waiter told us. He took them off us however and added more orange juice so we were able to drink them. Well, we'd paid for them so we determined to drink them.

Now it may have been the ceviche but I reckon it was that high concentration of vitamin C that had me on the toilet for half the night!

Those are my memories of Lima. And sadly, that was the end of our 6 week tour. By coincidence, Lynn was on the same flight as me to Santiago the next day. From there she would be flying back to Brisbane via Aukland, then Sydney, a whole 2 days of travelling, arriving home Monday night, then back to work on the Tuesday. Or so we thought........
