Nha Trang is a beach resort on the South China Sea. It is nice enough, a long expanse of beach, hotels, and restaurants. The typical collection of touts and hawkers abound. Tourists and Vietnamese alike abound but it was not the high season, nor particularly good weather while we were there.

The best thing about our time in Nha Trang was getting to meet and view the work of Long Thanh, one of the most gifted photographers I've ever seen. This man picked up his first camera during the Vietnam war when, as a young man, he was sent to work with his uncle who had a photography shop in order to protect him and give him a livelihood other than being caught up in the war tearing the country apart. Working in black and white, his being Vietnamese gave him an access to the culture and people in a way no outside photographer could ever gain. His images are provocative and create a sense of place and feeling in a way I could only dream of doing with my own photography someday. I've posted his website below and hope you will go and enjoy some of the images of this very interesting, and very sociable photographer.

thank you again
I so enjoy follwing your web updates and all. The hsitory can never ever be fully learned in class rooms as you only truly understand when out there in the paths and battle fields and places things have happened.
I am really looking at Long Tahanh photos A true deep sense of his work showing us what few ever knew existed or happened.
