I'm in Goreme now. This place is amazing. It is in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. It's this incredible land of the most bizarre rock and troglodyte dwellings you can ever imagine. I will admit - I'm been getting a little too excited about these rocks. They are crazy looking. Apparently some of Star Wars was filmed around here, and it's not hard to figure out why. It's other-worldly here. It's astonishing, really, really astonishing.

The rock is a soft volcanic rock and over the years the wind and water has sculpted them into the most fascinating shapes imaginable. People have carved out homes, and lived inside these rocks and towers for 1000's of years. (I actually slept in one these cave rooms). A very strong Christian community started here early in the 200's A.D. or so. The built monasteries and churches inside the rock flutes and hills. Today I poked around the Goreme Open Air Museum. I can't imagine what life must have been like for the people who lived here.

Yesterday I had my first shave from a Turkish barber. It was quite an experience. First he lathers you up with a brush and soap, and then doubly shaves you with a straight razor. Then he rubs a magic stone all over your face (don't ask me) and washes it. Then cologne, and a cream massage, and a shoulder massage, and then, just to make sure he gets every little possible piece of hair, he lights a lighter and runs it all over your face. You leave with your face smoother than your butt when you were a baby, but stinking slightly of singed hair. I highly recommend it.

This morning, the news has the fact that a gunman in Amman, Jordan (where I am heading in 2 weeks) opened fire on tourists in the Roman ruins in the city - one killed, 6 wounded. I still maintain that this trip is, by and large, safe. Where as random religious or political violence may happen, the people are incredible and have shown so much friendship and hospitality. Anyway, this is something you can definately NOT email my mom if you don't mind.

Ok. the day is slipping by, and I need to go do something before my night bus to Syria (my god am I getting tired of night buses - you never sleep, and invariably have a smelly, large, spread out man next to you).

Guile Guile!!
