Left Koh Pangang, after brief visit to pick up diving mask that friends had left behind in a guest house, only they hadn't warned me about how remote the place was (one of the reasons they loved the place - Haad Yuan, only accessible by boat from Haad Rin, the location of the monthly craziness parties known as full moon party). However this month, April, is also the celebration of the Thai New Year (Songkram) which involves serious water fights on the street, every cafe/restaurant/home by the roadside are armed with a huge bucket of water, and splash anybody passing, whether driving a car, motorbike, or donning a police uniform (all taken in the best of spirits, the police simply wrap their guns in a polythene bag). Obviously it gives rise to more motorcyle accidents, and some parts of Thailand throw water for 7 days I'm told, but the festive air and good Thai humour is totally infectious.
Anyway, I had to brave it on the motorbike to get my ferry ticket in the town, leaving for Koh Samui on the 4.30 ferry, since my sister was arriving there at 5.30 pm. No sooner had I dried out on the ferry ride, and got back on "dry land", than I was a fair target again for a soaking. Met up with sis early evening, got ourselves some food, together with a Glaswegian friend of hers who lives and works on the island, and he gave us a pocket-sized guide to some of the bars, passing several that bordered on the seedy, and choosing Murphy's (Irish pub surprise surprise), as a relative safe haven from all the drum and bass radiating from the majority of other bars. Sister and I both left feeling quite pleased with our accommodation which was in a far quieter town.
