Started in Picton (where the ferry docks) and drove in a hired car down the west coast. Stopped at Nelson, then a scenic drive through the Buller gorge, to Westport, where I had a brief meeting with Pru and Brian. Visited the Franz Joseph glacier, climbing up into the crevasses with a guide. Went to other lakeside towns on the way to Queenstown to break up the journey. Had a trip on a jet boat (like a jetski but equipped for 20 or so people), up and down the rapids on the Shotover river.
Down to Milford Sound (which incidentally, is not a "sound", but a fjord), and took a cruise, up close to some spectacular waterfalls, saw a few seals basking on rocks. Next headed north and east, passing by Mt. Cook, and over to Christchurch where I had to pick up my return connecting flight to Auckland to set off on my next leg - Brisbane and Australia.
