the night train wasn't too bad. got some sleep which was good but as expected, got up early. switzerland is a really beautiful country. the countryside was amazing. being in the alps, means the country is quite mountainous. arrived in the zurich early morning and we decided to get some breakfast. to be honest, this city is exatly as i expected. big banks, flash shops on the high street and expensive.
wow!!! this is all grindelwald (and the jungfrau region) needs to descibe it. while getting the train from interlaken to here we saw the huge mountains surrounding the region. snow topped, and high as the sky, these natural structures were amazing. arrived at the hostel quite easily and were just amazed at the view from the hostel (make sure you google grindewald to see some pictures). we chilled out that afternoon still just gazing at the mountains. its also a bit nippy here - but were at 1000m. the hostel we're staying in, is a bit of a school group type place, but we found some older people and went for a drink with them. being in switzerland we tried local beer, but it wasn't amazing so ad decided to try the local spirit - absinth. yes, the devil like drink is from the swiss highlands. lets just saw, he was a bit sick!!!
despite the weather being awful (its raining and there are clouds everywhere) today, we decided to go on a walk round one of the mountains. we didnt exactly have the best equipment (all i had were some dunlop trainers and tried to put on as many layers as poss) so chose a slightly easier route. we got a cable car up 1400m and decided to walk round. it was a bit cloudy, but the view of the town and the mountains was great. we went round the valley and although we sort of got lost in the one of the small forest type things we found our way out. we were all over the place and walked all the way up to 1600m beofre finally descing back to grindelwald. it had been quite a walk and despite raining and cold we really enjoyed the view and the selculsion of most of the walk. we were both drained and went to bed quite early.
got up at 6.15 to go up to jungfraujoch - the highest train station in europe. luckily it was a clear day so we able to see for miles once up there. along the way the train stopped at various points for pictures - there were two spots within the mountain that the train stopped for some amazing photos. got to the top, and as we were on the first train up there was nno one on the top viewing place. it was -12.9oC and 55km/hr wind at the topo - FREEZING!!! but the view was amazing. we were even able to walk up onto the glacier which was quite cool. the snow was up to my knees but it was a great experience. there was also an ice sculptures exhibition at the top which was ok.
