Ok, so not quite the centre of the universe (which everyone knows is Reading, of course) but today I went to the a place called La Mital del Mundo, literally 'the middle of the world'. Having spent the first part of the week on my own personal walking tour of Quito (only by day, mind, strictly taxis after dark), I thought it was time to explore a little further afield. £20 later and I'm off with my private guide Sebastián (whose parents own the hostal I'm staying at) to the middle of the world.
Got the requisite photo of me straddling the equator with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern. I've worked out that I'm not actually a 'traveller' in the strictest sense of the word (bus travel everywhere, shared rooms in hostals, cold showers etc). I'm more of a tourist with a rucksack on a long holiday (air travel or private transfer, private ensuite rooms, hot showers etc). Would a genuine traveller pose for the gimmicky 'straddle the equator' shot...yeah, probably they would, but they'd still be going back to their shared dorm by bus wouldn't they!
Interesting enough place, La Mital del Mundo, with lots of information on the varios indigenous peoples of Ecuador. There's plenty of building work going on around there, as a whole town has grown up around the monument / exhibition, and the town looks set to grow and grow (just like Topsy).
Earlier in the week I wandered around both the new and old towns of Quito, the old town being a UNESCO World Heritage site. Again, rather than rush to head off to places further afield, I seem content to remain awhile wherever I land and get a feel for the people, the pace of life etc. Lord nows I've never been an adrenaline junky, so I'm happy to walk and explore as I go.
I do have some pictures, mostly from Mital del Mundo, to post but I picked a cyber cafe without USB ports on their pcs. In this day and age, can you believe it?!
More updates coming soon.
