On Saturday, 4/28, I hopped on the AVE (Alta Velocidad Espanola) or the Spanish Fast Train from Madrid and enjoyed a 20 minute super fast view of the Spanish country side (travelled 45 miles in this time) on my way to the ancient city of Toledo.  Toledo is about 45 miles South of Madrid and is a major point of historical importance in Spanish history.  Toledo was first settled by the Moors as early as the 8th or 9th century A.D. and over hundreds of years, were later inhabitated by the Jews, and finally later, the Christians.  So, the city has a very interesting cultural history and the architecture is very  mixed from the colorful Arabic tiles of the Moors, to the grandeous Gothic Cathedral that took 200 years to finish builiding.

The whole town is like a step back in history.  It is surrounded by a moat then enclosed by huge walls that were used for protection.  Toledo is also built up on a hill, so the views from certain parts of the city are specatcular

Toledo is very small and easy to see in a day.  I arrived there around 2pm on Saturday, and had seen just about everything by the time the last train left to return to Madrid at 9:30pm.  I was not on a tour, so unfortunately I don't have as much interesting information about the pictures as I normally would (this may not be disappointing to some of you!).

Oh, one more thing....as much as Toledo is a "must see" for anyone coming to Spain, it is very touristy.  I had 2 of the worst meals since I've been in Spain there.  As you can see from the pictures, there are alot of outdoor cafes that cater to tourists.  I tried to stay away from those that were in the main plaza, but still unfortunately paid 20 Euros for mystery meat and a salad.  Although I do have to say, the homemade caramel flan for dessert (came with the meal) was excellent!  If I could only survive on wine and desserts....

OK, I have another blog to post with more pictures from my trip to Avila and Segovia that I will get done later today.  Have a great day!
