On 4 February we finally met Najma Haque, whom I know since 1980 when she became the first female UNICEF zonal representative in Jessore. That caused quite a shock in those days in this male dominated islamic society. We had tea in her family house with a big garden in Indira Road and we had good discussions with her and her sister Naima..

After that we were invited to join her to a wedding party of one of her friends. This was in Dhanmondi, the area where I lived from 1978 to 1981. At night I could not recognise much. The party was in a huge Chinese restaurant Xingxing. On each of its four floors there was a beautiful bride siting on a rostrum surrounded by people with cameras. The father of the bridegroom first took us to the wrong floor.

Each floor had long tables were people were seated, guided by the father. After a while typical Bengali food was served that some 250 hands finished in no time. Another picture with the bride and over was the party. The young couple was married earlier and this was a reception to celebrate with friends. This is the marriage season, Najma said.

On 5 February more RDRS alumni have arrived, the women waned to do shopping. Chris was able to get an old taxi that was dropping someone of some next door. We hired the dented t until 15:00 to take us around Banani, Gulshan and further. We couldn' t find Chris's house. We had a quick look in the Dutch club. We ran into a member who introduced us. At the American club Jim and his son Onni were not so lucky. We were not allowed in for Jim' s french fries and a beer. We drove to the Sheraton hotel, earlier Intercontinental. I could barely recognise it, but the Zakira shop were I did my first shopping in 1978 was still there.

We had a great lunch in the five-star Sonargaon hotel.

Kus

Hi Dick,
Good to hear from you. I was about to e mail asking about your drive all the way to Rangpur. Hows your celebration going? It also should be cooler than Dhaka. Even I was surprised about the 3 weddings on 3 floors. If weddings are so many now imagine what it will do to our population soon. Rangpur has some beautiful spots and Ramsagar is not too far in Dinajpur. Maybe you will have the time to look around. Good meeting you,and hope you come back soon. Good luck on the rest of your trip. Keep me posted (I can open your blog ,see ? thats a good beginning!).A little bit more in detail about India and Srilanka. Say Hi to Cris.Najma
