We first got off the train at Circular Quay, which put us right on the Rocks, which is the main drag for shops and bars and such. We stopped into a couple of random shops, on our way to the bridge (the rocks sit right under the Sydney Harbour bridge). We then made our way to the top of the bridge, quite a hike up many flights of stairs. Anyways, we then went to the center of the bridge, and got a photo op, since the bridge looks right onto the harbour, with a great view of the Opera House.
Then we walked around the rocks a bit more, trying to decide what to do next, and we eventually decided to head to the Sydney Aquarium
After the aquarium, we walked into "town" where there were bigger buildings and such, and stumbled onto the mall. The mall is HUGE. We went right off the street, down a level, and then down another level, walked a bit (under the street) with stores all along the way. We then got to a part that had stores on each level, 4 stories high. We continued walking, and came to an exit (finally) which exited onto a plaza, with an open air market dealie, (like a strip mall on both sides of the street, with walking area in the center). On the other side of this plaza, there was another mall! There were way too many stores to count, and I'm sure it's way bigger than any other mall I'll ever be to. I'm going to try to get back there, and hopefully I won't get lost inside the mall, cuz I'm sure it would be very easy.
From there, we kept walking, and found the Sydney Tower (one of the taller buildings in Sydney, that lets you go to the top floor, and has a 360 degree view of the city, with binoculars available and such)
So we got to the Hard Rock Cafe: Sydney, and it was really cool (as I would expect). It was about half the size of the Boston one, I'm guessing its because its not as popular with Aussies. Anyways, we had a good meal, I got an excellent vegetarian sandwich, notably containing large quantities of avacado (which is way more common and cheap in Australia, which I love). So I also got a keychain and a hat, with the Hard Rock logo on it. Grand total: $47.50. Pretty expensive, but then again, when will I ever be back?
So moving on, we decided to walk to the Botanical Gardens (which ended up being closed). We were able to walk around the outside of the Gardens, over to a point that was awesome for a photo op of the Opera House and the Bridge together (at night). I got one awesome picture, after taking many, night time photos are difficult.
After that, we walked to the Opera House, and got to see it up close. It really isnt very big, but it looks big because of the "frill" of the sail like design
All along the Opera house (on the walk to the train station) there were parties. Random DJ's on the street, people sitting on a stool playing a guitar, and one fancy Swing party in a nearby apartment. It was nice just walking by and listening to the music, which was really "groovy". I would have loved to have been partyin it up, but as it was, we were just able to make the last train back to Wollongong.
Thats all from Sydney, stay tuned for my next adventure!
