The Santa Cruz Plaza de Toros (Bull Ring) was officially opened in 1893 and had the capacity to hold 6,800 people.
It was designed by Antonio Pintor and Ocete on behalf of The Society Tinerfeña, using Almohad horseshoe arches and battlements which have long since disappeared.
In 1924 the square was burnt and a large part of it was destroyed the stands and pens were affected.
Renovations were made and bull fights were hosted there until 1983. Since then different events have taken place there including the election of the Carnival Queen, Rondallas Murgas, Canarian Wrestling and Boxing. It at one time became a recreatonal space for young children as well as becoming the venue for circuses.
The Plaza de Toros, at the moment is an eye sore and is totally abandoned, there have been many ideas and debates. It appears that there is no problem with the structure, it's foundations are sound.
The possible demolition of the Plaza de Toros generated a discussion in which different political groups expressed views. Citizens also have spoken publicly on the particular occasion.
According to newspaper archives, in 1986 the City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife had decided to transform this space into a multi-purpose arena with a capacity for 10,000 people. Therefore, the project was included in the Special Plan to Reform Interior (PERI) because it was considered a heritage that should be retained. To this end, the Municipality of the capital of Tenerife amount allocated 35 million old pesetas.
