For something different we went to the VW Phaeton assembly complex. The tour allowed us to see the inside workings of this completely transparent 4 story glass building where all components are shipped and final assembly and ' marriage, (yes thats what they call it) of the body being bolted to the motor with drive train. The car is top end luxury car but they don't talk about the car. It's all about the experience of designing your individual car with luxury trimmings and style. The real inspiration is that's it hand built to your specifications
However, the factory complex is outstanding in design that is so complex that they even have bird noises to stop birds from flying into the glass. The car is little insignificance compared to the factory; though not to those ordering an individual car I guess. Anyone ordering can choose to watch the full process of their cars assembly and have a special handing over ceremony.
Our time ran out in Dresden. We could have spent more time here but had originally only thought of it as a stopover night but it turned out to be a much more interesting city than we imagined.
Our train journey to Berlin was made more enjoyable by the surprise gin and tonic drinks Ruth and Mark organised, so the time went by quickly. We didn't expect quite the number and vibe of so many young people chatting in the street, in lounges, at the desk when we arrived at the Circus Hotel and Hostel we had booked. They are a great group of young people running the hotel and we have a comfortable small apartment on the top floor.
