Where I stayed
18th - next stop Humahuaca, only 40 minutes north of Tilcara. Again, I'd been recommended a hostel in this town, but it turned out to be a bit of a walk from the centre. Nice but a bit isolated, so Sylvie and I decided to buy food from the market and cook in the hostel so that we didn't have to walk into town in the dark. We turned out to be the only guests, and had a dorm and the kitchen to ourselves. Maybe cold salad and cold white wine (Torrontes of course) wasn't the best choice as it was below freezing at night (3,000m altitude)...
Next morning, before carrying on towards the border, we took what we thought was going to be a simple, short walk along the Quebrada, though we couldn't find the path for love nor money. Anyway, it gave us more time to go back to a lovely cafe we'd discovered the day before for lunch, and then take some more photos of the beautiful town.
Sylvie was actually planning to go to Bariloche to find work during the ski season, but eventually decided beforehand to travel with me up to and over the border to buy some cheap Bolivian winter gear!
