Where I stayed
Next stop Cafayate, in the heart of the Valles Calchaquies. I was met at the bus terminal by a girl promoting her hostel, so decided to give it a go. Luckily I got a dorm room to myself for 2 nights as it wasn't very busy, and this particular room had one double bed and 2 sets of bunks, (a bit of a weird combination), but great for me!
That evening I was chatting with a couple of girls from Cordoba in the hostel (over a few beers!), who were sports teachers staying there for a convention, and they asked me to ask them a question in English for practice - ok, so the question was 'have you got a boyfriend'? to which one of them replied 'no, but I have a girlfriend'. Turns out they both had female partners. Great choice of question Diane... We had a good laugh about it.
The next day I took a tour organised through the hostel, travelling along a 50km stretch of the Quebrada de Cafayate, stopping off at various points of interest along the way and taking a couple of 30min - 1 hour hikes. We also stopped off at a small site selling ceramics, wine and cheese, where I bought a bottle of sweet white wine, usually drunk at room temperature, for about £2.50. I shared it with some guys in the hostel that evening together with an asado.
Although you have to travel along this same stretch of road from Cafayate to Salta, it's still worth taking a tour so you can get out and walk and take photos away from the main road.
Next stop Salta...
