If you haven't heard of couchsurfing then check out the link below:

I was a bit hesitant about couchsurfing but needn't have been at all. I contacted David last week to see if I could stay with him for a couple of nights on his farm and luckily he was available - he hosts many travellers and really enjoys meeting new people - so I was lucky to have the perfect host and a beautiful setting for my first time!

He met me at Carmelo and we drove from there for about half and hour to his farm. Wow, what a place! So peaceful and scenic... David has a dog called Iru (really cute) and 2 beautiful white horses. We spent time chatting and working - I helped David chop and prepare wood for the fire for winter (my first time using a chain saw!), I drove his tractor (not easy with a trailer on the back!), and even baked bread - yes don't faint, it even tasted ok! David prepared an asado by his fire in the living room which tasted just delicious. If any further couchsurfing experiences are half as good as this one I'll be happy.

It's so great spending time with local people when you're travelling instead of staying in hostels the whole time and mixing with other travellers, I think you get a much better insight into the real country and it's certainly more memorable.

David invited me to join him and his canoeing club members on a 2 day river trip on the 5th and 6th Feb, but first I wanted to see the Llamadas (carnaval parades) in Montevideo on the 3rd and 4th so off I went to MVD...

Hi, love this idea of couchsurfing, I just recommended this to a friend who may well be able to offer a couch for the night...good one.
