Treasures hidden in The Guildhall

On Thursday I went to the Guildhall with my Civ. of London class. It is one of the hidden treasures of London. The Guildhall is rich with history and beauty. The Guildhall is one of the official residencies of the Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor is the Mayor of the City of London, this includes only that part of London which exists within the confides of the Roman Wall. The Lord Mayor is Second only to the Queen. Guildhall has existed since the time of Anglo-Saxon England, and was a place where citizens could pay their taxes and make complaints when sold unfit goods. A replica of the original Guildhall exists in the current Guildhall's basement (the crypt), this is where it originally stood before it was destroyed in the bombings during WW2. The second Guildhall was build to expand the space in the late 13th century; this hall contains windows depicting important figures in creating London today and its government. The Guildhall in use today stands above the crypt and is used for important governmental functions, for example each year the City's economic plans are announced to the public within Guildhall. In the past it was used as a high court where people where sentenced to death for crimes like treason. It was also a place where the many guilds of London would meet and discuss business. Guildhall also has a library and a museum of art within it. At the very bottom of the Guildhall found in its original location is the Roman Amphitheater in London.   The Roman's invaded London in 55BC and influenced a great deal of the architecture and lifestyle in the city at that time. This amphitheater was not discovered until 1988 and was built in as an exhibit located underneath the Guildhall yard. When entering the Guildhall you are essential standing above the amphitheater. The Guildhall is an interesting place filled with history and great beauty.
