First visit was to a gymnasium (grades 6-12) about 45 minutes from Brno near the Slovakia border. The school was 90 years old (with some modern updates) and has about 600 students.  One interesting thing about the school is that at one time, the school was for Germans only -- no Czechs could attend. After WWII all Germans were expelled (kicked out -- in some cases, violently) from the Czech Republic and the school was then for Czech students.  During the Under the communist era, the school fell into disrepair and has been in the process of updating since the fall of communism in 1989.   After the school visit we had, of course, a 2 hour lunch.

Next we stopped to visit a chateau.  The chataue was the "summer home" for the Lichtenstein family.  This was only one on of there any estates.  They were really, really rich and powerful.  Climbed to the top of a mineret one of the Lichtensteins had built to entertain their guests
Pretty amazing that one family had all this land, buildings, gardens, etc.

The most educational part of the day followed with an hands-on learning experience in a local wine cellar.  Toured the maze of wine cellars and ended with tasting 10 different types of wine.  Since only about 5-6 of us on the trip drink -- I know this is hard to believe -- we had a big job of finishing off the opened bottles.  The one really cool part of the wine tradition in the area is the storage lockers.  When you buy the wine from this vineyard, you get a storage locker in the cellars with your own lock and key.  The key will also get you into the cellars 24 hours a day so you can go down their and have private parties and get together with friends.  The wine in this region of Moravia is almost all white wines.  They are very light and tasty.  I would hate to tell a Hungarian, but I prefer the Moravian wines.  If you are at Trader Joe's or Total Wine look for some white wine fron Moravia, Czech Republic.  I'm having some of the left over wine right now as I write this entry.
There was also a folk music group that played for use -- so this was an evening of song and dance.  After all the wine, I even tried a few steps -- you probably already know how that turned out (ha ha).

Looking forward to some cave exploration in the Moravian Karst tomorrow.
