Where I stayed
We decided to splurge (must stop doing that) and booked ourselves into Chalalan Eco lodge, 6hrs into up the Rio Tuichi River, for three days. We were lucky enough to have our very own guide, Sergio, who came from the local village (supported by the lodge) who had superb knowledge of the terrain.
The lodge is idyllically set next to a small lake in the middle of the forest. Arriving at midday we were dripping with sweat and dying for a swim....thank goodness we took a dip in the lake BEFORE we had seen what lived In it....after the trek and canoe trips there would be no more swimming! Our first sighting of a Caiman (crocodile) in the 'swimming' lake was pretty chilling, and the fact that they don't "eat people" doesn't really set your mind at ease!
Sergio had us up at sunrise for morning treks. Hearing the forest come alive in the morning was something special. Everywhere you looked forest life was taking place. The massive trees were incredible and explanations of what the various plant life could be used for so interesting. We came across loads of monkeys, saw a Tarantula on a night walk, went Piranha fishing, stumbled into a pack of wild pigs, got up close to a 1m Boa Constrictor snake, tracked cayman eyes by night, saw all kinds of birds including eagles and the very noisy Serrera birds, and really just got to grips with nature for a few days. Definitely one of the highlights so far.
