Marari Beach Resort

We spent the last four days in Kerala in a lovely beach resort in the small village of Mararikulam. It was a wonderful relaxing stay in a cottage with winding paths down to the Indian Ocean and around to the swimming pool and dinning room. It was amazing that we were able to get to this place in time for Jacqui to spend a day in bed recovering from her illness. I followed her example and spent the third day in bed with my case of the Delhi Belly. We decided that maybe the food on the houseboat got us. It tasted wonderful but the doubts about preparation and storage crossed our minds.

I took a dip in the Arabian Sea and it was like getting into one's bath except it tossed you around like a cork. I got knocked to my knees by the waves when trying to exit its embrace and crashed into the sand along with the wave. Managed to get a bit of a sunburn in about 25 minutes in the sun. Went from the beach, tried a hammock and headed off to the swimming pool. The pool was also very warm but not such a bully. Big and beautiful pool that spend its day in the blazing sun.

The only complaint we would have is that you get tried of the buffet dinner. The ala carte menu was limited and not too appealing. I have discovered that I am not such a fan of many South Indian, or at least, Kerala, dishes. The curries in the north have more of a tomato or yogurt base unlike these dishes. The taste of coconut oil is in everything. All though, I did enjoy the masala dosa at the breakfast buffet. The problem with the resort is it was the only show in town for food so it was back to the buffet for all dinners.

The resort offered walking tours through the local village that Jacqui took twice, once on her own (I was 'resting') and once with me. The first one had a good guide who took time to visit with the villagers and show things to the participants, the second guide was not into it as the first.

What can you say about four days of sun, beach, pool and relaxing, except it was nice after the hustle and bustle of the previous month.

We may have stayed in the same place; the outdoor bathroom looks familiar....
