After Sardinia, I took another overnight ferry back to the mainland of Italy and the port of Livorno. From there, I took the train north along the coast to the famous Cinque Terre, a stretch of 5 small, quaint towns perched on the cliffsides. I stayed in the southern-most of the 5 towns, Riomaggiore.
There is a beautiful trail you can hike to get from one town to the next. It takes about 3 1/2 hours to do the whole thing, but going to the 2nd and 3rd towns is relatively easy...the hike gets much harder going to the 4th and 5th towns. At the end, you can just hop on a train back to the beginning.
There were tons of tourists around, especially Americans. I stayed in a hostel where everyone in the room was travelling along...the first time that's happened. A girl froms Canada, a girl from Utah but studying at NYU, a guy from Durango, CO, and a guy from San Francisco. We had a good time hanging out together...went to dinner the first night and cooked dinner in our kitchen the second night.
The first day I was there, I did the hike, but unfortunately the weather wasn't great, so I didn't take a ton of pictures. But the ones I did take are pretty good!
I'm about to wrap up my tour of the French Riviera and will do a post for that soon! Time is flying by..only 9 days left!!
