This morning our guide told us that the hot springs we had been to the evening before had been completely flooded. We were all convinced he was joking until he showed us a digital picture on his camera. The whole thing had been covered by the river! I really hope those campers we saw got out alive!

We were all prepared for extreme rain, similar to the night before, so we covered ourselves to the brim in ponchos and various rain gear. I even bought two plastic sacks to wear around my feet. Ironically, the rain stopped just before our trek so our extreme measures were rather useless. We first crossed a bridge over the now, very high river. Next we walked up a road which traveresed along a steep mountain. We were warned by oncoming hikers to hurry because the road ahead was collapsing. Sure enough, minutes later, we saw a that a large portion of the road had fallen down the steep cliff. It was still wide enough for us to walk across but there was no way a vehicle could drive through.

The rest of our trek was relatively uneventful and we spent most of the time walking along railroad tracks, getting devoured by mosquitos despite our liberal application of insect repellent. Water rose up to the track levels at several points. Finally, we arrived at the small town of Aguas Calientes, which gets its name from the nearby hot springs (not the same ones that got flooded last night). We were supposed to wake up at 3AM to climb up to the world renowned Machu Picchu so most of us went to sleep right after dinner. It continued to rain that night...
