We woke up pretty late at about 10:00 but luckily there was no hangovers and breakfast and coffee was quickly underway. The sun was shining bright and it was a gorgeous day and we were moving pretty slow just enjoying the weather. We planned to pack up and ferry to Santorini but were a little scared by whether or not the ferries were running and desperately wanted to get the internet working to find out before we packed up. Moving the laptop closer to the hub we were able to grab the signal (couldn't get it where our tent was) but still could not connect. Knowing Gunner and Anna had a laptop and had the internet working we went to check if we could use there’s. The whole campsite was still sleeping at this point as we had pushed them pretty hard last night but Gunner was at least up and moving by the time we got there. He also informed us that the reception had given us the wrong password for the internet and this was why we couldn’t connect. A little ticked off that we could have had internet all this time we moved the chairs over to where we had the laptop and sat down to do some research finally having internet.
To our dismay we learned that the ferries to Santorini only run twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday. It was currently Wednesday but we learned that the ferry departed at 6:50 in the morning and we had missed it. After an hour of scouring sights we couldn’t find any other way to get to Santorini and would have to spend till Sunday on Crete before catching the ferry. We loved our time on Crete but this meant, due to our plane ticket, that we were now slightly more time crunched for the rest of the trip than we would have liked. We would now only have three days on Santorini and three days in Athens. Initially disappointed and kicking ourselves for not learning this earlier we quickly came to terms with the situation. We wouldn’t have passed up last night for anything and being the earlier departure of the ferry maybe it was for the best anyway. Sometimes not all mistakes are bad ones and as we really only planned to do some basic hiking on Santorini and relax it just meant we would continue to relax in Crete and just do hiking in Santorini. Loving the time spent with our new friends and the weather here, before long we weren’t even mad about the situation anymore.
Packing up the laptop we headed off for a Walmart like superstore that Gunner had told us about last night. It’s called Lidl and apparently has dirt cheap prices on everything and with directions in hand we headed off. Most of the folks around the campsite had begun stirring by this point but we had definitely done a number to them as they all looked pretty hung over. Damn young kids and their terrible influence on the seniors, hehe. When we got to the store it was massive and the prices were indeed dirt cheap. We were able to pick up 4kg of oranges for €0.69 and 0.5l cans of beer for €0.50 among other things. What a relief this place was after being gouged so bad back in Italy. We also found the supplies to make some caesar salad’s to go with supper thinking it might help curve the portion size problem we are having and a nice change.
When we got back to the site we decided to move our tent closer to the hub so we could have continuous internet. It was a tricky procedure as we had stocked up a lot of food and had to leave someone behind to guard it as the dogs were very interested and just waiting for their chance. Luckily once we had everything but the tent and food moved the dogs got distracted and we took our window. Carrying the tent over already set up the food was temporarily unguarded but by whistling at the dogs they were following us and also distracted by something in the bushes. Returning for our food we had successfully moved our site to right beside the bathrooms also which was rather convenient. We gave up our beach side property but the internet at this point was far more valuable as we had gone so long without it we finally had a free stable connection to do some much needed catching up.
Finally having internet we did a bunch of emails and browsing the net as I tend to get the itch without my daily browsing. We cooked up some pasta for supper and the caesar’s were an awesome change. I quickly downloaded all the TV episodes that we were behind on (Big Bang Theory, 2.5 Men, Heroes, and even the starting of American Idol) I have never actually watched American Idol before but after following X-Factor in England I thought it might be interesting and a nice change. We also snapped up a couple movies as our selection had gone to repeats already. The rest of the night was spent watching those until we got chased inside at 7:00 by the rain and spent the remainder of the evening watching them in our cozy tent. God I hate that tent, as much as I hate our packs. It was so much nicer sitting outside but I don’t really feel like having my laptop get poured on so we make do with what we have.
