Where I stayed
Elizabeth Camping
We awoke this morning to blue skies and blazing sun as the temperature had already reached 20C and it was only 9:00. We put the last of our laundry in to allow it the longest possible time in the sun to dry. In the end it took three loads but we washed everything we owned. We cooked up some oatmeal which we finally mastered and put on some coffee. The next two hours were spent lying in the sun not moving as it cooked us. It felt about 30C in the sun and we were on cloud nine but we could see clouds coming so we didn't bother moving till noon when we finally mustered the energy to go get some more food thanks to Milly. By the time we got back it had clouded over and with the wind it was actually a bit chilly having to put our sweaters back on.
We ate some lunch and Scott lounged until he actually feel asleep while I blogged away in the tent. We were hoping that the sun would return but it never did and we burned most of the afternoon just lying around and catching up on blogs. We started supper at 5:00 while we still had light as cooking via torch is pretty difficult. Because we were stationary for a while we wanted to try something different and went for scrambled eggs and sausages. This was a horrible idea trying to cook scrambled eggs with a quarter sized hot spot in the pan and the sausages destroyed our frying pan. It was the longest dishes ever as we didn’t have anything to scrub with and it took quite a while to get all the burn off. The food wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t worth the time or destruction to our pots.
We had planned to spend the day on the beach but thanks to the cloud cover that never really happened. We were a little disappointed but at least we had the morning which was gorgeous. We were also struggling with supper as our normal portion sizes were no longer filling us up and would have to increase how much we were cooking to fill us up.
Already dark and not having any plans for the evening we decided it might be fun to gather up a bunch of wood on the beach and have a fire. I had been dying for a campfire this trip but no campsites have pits leaving us out to dry. Luckily there was tons of wood on the beach and a fire pit which we had spotted earlier. The only problem was we didn’t have any paper and most of the wood on the beach was bamboo. I figured it would probably burn but it would just flash burn and not have any substance to it. We spent an hour walking around with a torch and found as much normal wood as we could and a bunch of bamboo for fun dragging it back to the campfire pit. Scott went to get the beers and chairs while I went looking for paper. Unfortunately we didn’t have anything but a few receipts in our wallets. The decision was made to rip some old pages out of the journal book I was carrying and we had everything we needed. With not a lot of paper we made sure to get it right the first time and built up a nice starter pile and set the lighters to work. Somehow we were able to get it to go and amping up the wood size we had ourselves a stable campfire on the beach with the waves crashing in, stars shining bright and cold beer in hand.
It had just hit 19:00 and we were in heaven and I was on cloud nine finally having my campfire. It was time to find out what happens to bamboo and we tossed some on. We learned that it burns incredibly fast and hot and became a bit of a game as we just tossed it on now and then to create a raging inferno. Sitting there enjoying life time flew by until it was 23:00 and we had exhausted our supply of wood. Still having a bunch of bamboo left we tossed it all in one big heap and created ourselves a bonfire as a finale. We spent most of the time by the fire just chatting away about anything and everything until the final hour which was spent talking about all of mom’s home cooked food we missed. By the time we got back to the tent we were starving having covered pretty much everything our mom’s cook and how badly we wanted some. I hope those ovens are ready for when we get home cause there is a couple years worth of catching up to do. We fell asleep by midnight and hoped that tomorrow would bring us sunshine and again hoping for no rain as our clothes remained on the lines almost dry but with the cloudy day it was taking longer than we expected.
