After a long 9 hour bus ride from Prague to Krakow yesterday, I was up bright and early to go to the famous Salt Mines which is about a 40 minute local bus ride from Krakow.  If anyone is even thinking of just jumping on the bus without a ticket you better think twice.  There were undercover officers checking tickets on both segments of my bus rides.

The Salt Mines are a UNESCO heritage site.  The floors and walls are all made of salt though you would never know it.  In fact, the floors feel like polished marble but are actually salt.  There etchings on the walls are also made of salt.

Tourists are only allowed to see a small fraction of the salt mines.  We only descended about 440 feet even though the deepest part is over 1000 feet below the surface.

The day trip to Auschwitz was the trip that I was looking most forward to.  It's so heavily visited that you have to pay to go on a guided tour between 10am and 3pm.  So you know me, I was on the first bus out of Krakow and was able to get in at 8:30 for free.  I'm not joining a pesky tour!

It was nice to have the place almost to myself for a while.  I was able to take my time as I wandered around looking for photo ops, and, reading about the atrocities that happened at Auschwitz.  The amount of suffering that took place there is just unimaginable.

Hi Julie, I am certainly enjoying my time off. Wish I had done this years ago. It's already done wonders to recharge my batteries!

Hey Carl, I wish I knew you were going to Poland, I could have hooked you up with some of my relatives! They would get a kick out of you (and you of them). I'm sure you could have even talked them into making you some homemade kielbasa...yum! Nostrovia, my friend.

Wow, this is a whirlwind tour! I loved Poland when I went there ages ago. It looks cold there!
