So at 4:30 this morning we took off from SB heading towards Flagstaff, AZ.  We are having a blast, amazingly, the 12 hours in the car today did not feel like it!
We had breakfast in Ludlow, CA at this random little coffee shop in the desert off the old Route 66. We are determined to beat Rachel Ray at her $40 a day budget for the both of us, so far so good! To meet this goal we are sharing food to benefit not only our budget... but our waistlines as well.
After making it through the Mojave Desert which was the hottest and driest part of our trip so far; we made it into beautiful Arizona.  We both thought it was just going to be more desert...low and behold, it's gorgeous!  After Kingman it's all green hills with tons of trees and bright yellow wildflowers all along the highway.  We pulled off the road at some Ranch turn off to take in the view. (See pics)
Next, off to the Grand Canyon via Williams, AZ where we stopped at a ranger station to ask for directions.  Betty, our roadside magellan GPS friend starting stearing us in the wrong direction!  She gets confused sometimes...I'm sure we'll have more to say about that along the way!
Anyhow, Ranger Bill gave us the low down on how to get to the Grand Canyon - then mentioned something no one had mentioned before...it's monsoon season! We have those here? So we take our Grand Canyon info brochure and maps and head up the hill. Along the way we stopped and hung out at the Flinstones campsite (check out the pics). This is where the rain sets in...We continue up the hill, clear up to the edge of the Grand Canyon at Mather Point only to be pounded on my huge raindrops, covered with dark clouds and literally dodging lightening bolts! We don't have lightening like this in Cali. Clear skies on one side and gloom right above. When entering the park we thought it would be responsible to ask what exactly we should be aware of while there is thunder and lightening surrounding us, our cashier then tells us to stay close to the car if there is lightening - do not go out to the rim.  Now we did not drive the past 10 hours to pay $25, NOT to see the Grand Canyon!  So, like fools, we park, jump out of our car, and run to the rim where we were told specifically not to.  We felt that if we were fast enough we would be safe, so in a matter of 8 minutes we managed to run to the rim, take about 15 pictures (some we had to bribe from foreigners also escaping the rim) in the pouring rain running along the path as the clouds would rumble and the sky would flash all around us (did I mention we are in shorts and flip flops?).
Luckily, we found other points of this huge canyon were not having such problems and we did get to enjoy the beauty and breath taking views along the south rim.  We did not expect to stay the 3 hours we did!  We would have stayed longer but there was an issue with running water - which effects restrooms if you are not aware!  Looked to us, this had been a problem for some time!
On the way out of the Grand Canyon national park we drive through the Navajo Indian Reservation and pick up some Buffalo Jerky (tastes just like beef) and authentic jewelry. As we continue down the hill to Flagstaff we take in the amazing view of the sun going down through the storm clouds. Absolutely beautiful rays of sun shining down. Once we made it to town, we stopped off for a cheap dinner at The Village Inn on Route 66 and a clean working restroom.
We are now safe and sound (and dry) at a Super 8 in Flagstaff (no thanks to Betty ), and are looking forward to standing on the corner of Windslow, AZ tomorrow and just taking it easy.
See us at the same bat time in the same bat cave here on TravelPod.com!
