Where I stayed
The mean streets of Barranquilla

We recently found out that Colombia's hot spot for carnival was in Barranquilla, only 2hrs from Cartagena where we were staying.

So next morning at 6am, after a good 4hrs sleep we dragged ourselves to the bus station to navigate the confusion of the general lack of buses, and into a collectivo taxi. A few hours later we had made our way to the site of the parade and all we had to do was wait, eat meat sticks, drink some beer and avoid being targeted by water/powder/foam fights from the locals. This proved a little more difficult than expected as we stood out like proper gringos and were constantly stared at or asked where we were from. England! David Beckham! yes. I blame Des' vest top.

Anyway, one pickpocket attempt later, the parade started. Luckily our new local friend was on hand to offer all sorts of explanations ranging from the best way to buy beer to who the scantily clad lady on the nearest float was. Visibility was somewhat limited by the ($70 entrance fee) stand in front of us, so we quickly scaled the railing, much to the enjoyment of the locals. The view was perfect, the floats were cool, loved all the costumes and got some great pics, as well as copping a battering from surrounding water and powder fights.

My highlight however was when we went to the one portaloo in the area, and while I was inside, Des seemed to be getting friendly with the locals. By the time he went in they were all rather excitable and began banging on the loo and chanting 'BIRMINGHAM! BIRMINGHAM!'. Brilliant.

Then off to the bus before it all got out of hand and back to our lovely hostel in Cartagena for bed time!
