Chapada Dos Guimaraes to the Pantanal

It was a wet wake up in Chapada Dos Guimaraes, my tent had been flapping and waving around most of the night, I was cold (the zip on my sleeping bag has busted) I had things dropping on my tent most of the night (I saw lots of oranges in the morning, that hadn't been there when I got in the tent) I just rolled up my bag, mattress and put them in the truck, then I went to see if the kettle was on, I wasn't looking forward to putting away my tent (I was really hoping for a miracle, the rain and wind to stop and the sun to burst through, but it never happened)

I usually have all my clothes off, but not this night, it was freezing cold, the wind and rain didn’t help matters, the sun is a distant memory now, but we have been told this is exceptionally bad for this time of year (don’t really help us though)

I put my tent away, it was soaking, but not on the inside, I am happy to say, as for my washing, that was wetter than it was when it went on the line, so that went into plastic bags, hopefully to dry at the next stop

I don’t think many had a good night’s sleep, as sleeping bags were still out in preparation to the truck drive (and it was really cold on the truck) so when it got moving, everyone tried to grab a bit of kip

We arrived somewhere that had a supermarket and it was all off to grab hot food and drinks, then it was off to the Pantanal

We arrived and there was wildlife in abundance

I saw my first cappybarra, then lots of birdlife that I don’t know the name of, and even the tops of Caymans (a type of crocodile) floating about, and it was just the eyes you could see, so it was happy time with the camera

We arrived at our campsite and we have really been spoilt here, okay we are camped in the front garden, its cold (I have hung my tent up to dry) I had to put my washing round the back though

We have our meals provided in the restaurant here, they have other guests here, and we look like a bunch of refugees, the way we are all bundled up, we had roast chicken for dinner and all the trimmings and we even went round for seconds (God knows what the cook must wondered where all these hungry people had come from, we did eat a lot and it really beat truck food) I drank a lot of coffee

We are of in the morning, horse riding, boat trips and other stuff, so either way it looks like being a busy day (I have no idea what group I am with first thing, so I’ll just turn up and see where I end up

.......................................................................................................................................................

This should be fun, I am on the first group, HORSE RIDING!!!, only thing I know about horses is, they have a head at one end, a tail at the other and a leg at each corner and you are a long way from the ground, so this will be an interesting couple of hours

...........................................................................................................................................................

That was fun, even Rodney enjoyed himself, and to make things even better the sun came out

It was just following a trail and let the horse follow the rest really, pull left to turn left, pull right to turn right and pull back to stop, but I don’t think mine had breakfast, he just kept stopping for a pit stop, the ozone layer got a real good hiding when the tails lifted, but after getting off my horse it looked like it had very short legs and never really looked like a horse, more like a donkey, but without the ears, but he had a mind of his own, there was something he didn’t like on the trail and he was off, it looked like a log to me, but he never liked it, but I don’t know what he saw, he just spun round and was off with me trying to pull him to a stop, but when we tried to go back, he gave it a wide berth and waded through the mud and water

Its hard work taking photos from a horse that wants to stop and eat every few moments, but I found out you can take a horse to water, but he may never actually drink it, just stick his muzzle in the water, with me hanging on at a angle, but reverse worked well, just haul back and he goes back

Well the horse ride finished and getting off with a numb bum isn’t easy, but I did, we saw some calves, I thought they expected up to rope them, glad to say we didn’t, they just stood looking at us

I think wewe go for a walk after lunch, maybe over the same trail, but I did see a tower so maybe we can get to climb it while the sun is still shining, but we also have a chance to go fishing for phirana as well, so I hope I get a chance to try that as well, just have to see what comes up first, but I think we get a chance to try them all while we are here for the few days we are here
......................................................................................................................................

It was piranha fishing we went for this afternoon, so it was into a bus and a car, there was only 8 of us, and we never had far to go anyway, BUT before we set off a blue macaw showed up and was on our roof, it was eating apple and a banana, and posing for photos, I got some great shots of him/her

We got to the boats and set off, there were lots of birds, king fisher’s, little green parrots, snake head cormorants, black cormorants, and we even saw a giant otter, and they were really loud with their calls

We baited up the lines and dropped them in the water, within minutes I caught our first one, a yellow piranha, and it had a lot of teeth in that mouth, but it went into the bucket, we also caught a cat fish and a dog fish (and of course all the cat and dog jokes started)after that they came in fits and starts, so we ended up with about a dozen fish and they were all snapping in the bucket, the other boat caught about 15, not bad really for a couple of hours (but I thought catching them would be easier, they take the bait really fast and if you don’t strike they just take the bait and leave you with a empty hook

Even Rodney had his photo taken with a piranha (it was as big as him)

There was photos taken by everyone of the afternoons catch

We still have another day to go here, can’t wait to see what we do next

I did not have internet access for days because I am also out travelling these days as you know. I will be back on the 3rd. I will surely have much reading to catch up with.
Beautiful photos, but I will read everything when at home. It is SO BEAUTIFUL here at Pelion where we are Derrick, -a combination of mountains and amazing beaches.
