Leaving Yogyakarta

We were going to leave Yogyakarta at 12 noon, our bus wasn't due to leave until 1pm, so I had a couple of hours to kill, I heard that there was a Sultans Palace near here, so it was out with the map to find this place, as it turned out it was only a couple of Km down the road, so its boots on and off we go

The palace isn't as grand as some I have seen, but he still has a large entourage serving him, 2500 guards and 250 serving staff

The guards are pretty much old soldiers and they just sit about in traditional dress under trees in the shade, I don’t think they could do much, so I think it’s purely traditional and ceremonial, the KRIS they carry doesn’t look a very effective as a weapon, I asked one bloke to pull his KRIS out, it was rather black and rusty, I suppose if he used it, they may go down with blood poisoning

They had some ceremonial musicians there as well, it was interesting watching them, the drummers were funny, they were sitting there smoking, following the score then they would reach over and bang a drum or gong, then go back to having a smoke, I hung about and listened for awhile, it wasn’t very melodious or harmonious so I left them get on with it

There wasn’t much to photograph in here really considering he is a Sultan

There were lots of paintings of family trees, one of them had 80 odd children (imagine trying to remember birthdays or names)

Things aren’t so bad for the current Sultan, he has 5 girls and they are scattered around the world at school, his wife was a model at some point, she hasn’t produced a son and heir, so the next will be his brother

Not all previous Sultans fathered children with their various wives, they fathered them with the concubines as well (I guess things were boring before the TV was invented0 the Sultan now doesn’t have any concubines (I suppose the wife had a few objections)

There isn’t much else I can say about this Sultans Palace, it’s not as illustrious or as flamboyant as others we have seen (even lowly prince and princesses have had better)

I started to make my way back to the joke called a hostel, I could have really done with a shower, but all there is a pot and tap (the pot is used to flush the toilet) so as there was nothing better, I had to use that

I got myself 3 cups of McD’s coffee on my way back

Having the rinse down was a waste of time, I started sweating as soon as I got dressed

Everyone one else was sitting about just waiting for midday to arrive, I glad I did something with the few hours remaining here, even though it weren’t much

..................................................................................................................................................................

Our bus arrived, it was supposed to be a 'sleeper’ bus, it certainly wasn’t like the others we had used previously, this was just an ordinary bus with a blanket, it was going to be a long 22 hours on here, okay it had a toilet on board, but it being just a hole, it weren’t going to be fun to use, I didn’t take any photos of it, it was just a scabby bus, nothing outstanding about it, it was full, we couldn’t put our bags in the cargo hold under the bus, there were too many boxes and sacks there already so our bags were piled up on the back seats, then more boxes piled up against the emergency exit

We went around a picked up more people until the bus was full, there were kids and old people, and it really was going to be a very long night

We did stop about 4 hours down the road, just so the drivers could change over and have a smoke break, we managed to pile off and get some food and water, we needed it, it was like a mobile oven, they didn’t want to turn the A/C on

About 10 pm, we stopped for dinner, this was included in our fare, it consisted of rice, noodles, fried of course, some rather dubious meat and a cold sour tasting drink, there was no coffee, tea or even hot water to make any, we had 15 minutes to eat it and get back aboard, that wasn’t a problem, a lot of the food went in the bin, I had to break into my emergency Snickers bars

As we all piled on, the A/C was on; it was a relief, no idea why it could have gone on when the sun was shining

It was just impossible to get comfortable on these seats, they reclined, sort of, but it was just a case of drop your head and try to doze, I managed it for a while, but I woke up, it was freezing, people were wrapped in blankets, jumpers, even the drivers had ‘hoodies’ on

I went back to try and use the toilet, one of the drivers had made a bed from our bags and was fast asleep on them, he was none too happy when I woke him up and pulled my bag from underneath him, I stood a couple of other bags up, so he couldn’t use them as a  bed, I told him if he wanted to sleep, use the bloody boxes to sleep on, he gobbed off a bit, but I told him if he slept there I’d put him on the floor, he used the boxes

I asked the current driver to turn the A/C off, he wouldn’t, so a woman with a nipper told him, he did, it was amazing how efficient that A/C was at night

About 4am we stopped for another driver change and smoke break, outside the bus it was warm, and it was great to get off and get warm

The new driver was the one I slung off the bags, he started to drive off, the A/C went on full blast, he wouldn’t turn it off, and I guess it was his payback

About 6-7 am we pulled into this ferry dock, I didn’t know we would be getting a ferry, but apparently we are, it was a bit of a rust bucket, but they looked like they knew how to work this ferry

There was the usual multitude of sellers on board, just in case you had he urge to buy sunglasses or kids toy at 6am, but they did have sticky rice in banana leaves, I bought a couple of them, they were okay, then a coffee, it was bloody awful, but it did the job after that long night

the only goood thing was it was a chance to get some fresh air and take a few snaps of other ferries and craft on the water, it was surprising how many were on the water this time of the morning, I even got to see the sunrise, (so it may have been before 6am

We pulled up at the other side, so it was back on the bus to continue on our way

We seemed to be driving an awful long way and it was taking a long time, the port was supposed to be an hour away from the bus terminal, but after 2 hours, I asked Bob to check on his GPS, we were still 35 Km from it but the way the roads go, it would take another hour

We did eventually get to the bus terminal, now it was down to taxi; we still had another 25 Km to go to get to the hotel

The drive to this town was okay, but finding this tiny dingy hole was something else, we stopped and asked a couple of people, we found it in the end, it’s no different from our last hole, no water, beds with just a cover (which I have asked to be changed) I have asked for an ‘upgrade’ (now this is a real joke) with my ‘upgrade’ I get a fan and water, hot and cold, I think water and a fan is considered a luxury here, I don’t have any choice, I need a shower BEFORE I set off for Australia, they would never let me in

Well that’s it so far, I’m going to post this, then have my shower, and a couple of hour’s kip to catch up from last night, and then see what there is here

Good update Del, pictures say a lot, too. The sleeper bus sounded like another crap deal. I thought the taxi, with the horse would probably have gven a better ride than the sweatbox they called a sleeper bus.Thw sultans palace did not look 'uncomfortable', though. even if not as spectacular as those others you have seen. I would have been ok with the musicians, my misses reckons I am stone deaf.......
Hope you can get a decent shower before the off, mate.
Safe journey/
