Where I stayed
Jaipur
We are now in Jaipur, not really much difference in temperature, it was just too hot to do much after we arrived, so it was find somewhere to get some grub and just catch up
We are in the Sunder Palace guest house (and this bloke knows how to charge for every little thing, hot water for coffee/tea, clean towel, internet access, A/C he don't miss a trick, I guess that’s why we are the only people here and 4 in a room)
This place has a restaurant on the roof, but its only veggie food and as I really couldn’t be bothered I asked them to surprise me with a local dish and of course, coffee
Did I get a surprise when my dinner was bought to me, it looked like something from a babies nappy (diaper) it is some kind of spinach and cheese thing, but as I was hungry, I ate it (it went through me like grass through a goose, so I won’t be eating it again) the dry bread tasted better
It was up this morning, early to see this Amber Fort; it seems to pretty much surround Jaipur, with the castle dominating the whole area
It was built by Raja Man Singh, Mirza Raja Jai Singh, and Sawai Jai Singh over 2 centuries, there is a mixture of Hindu and Muslim architecture, seems to be marble and sandstone
The place has lots of nooks, crannies, rooms everywhere, it is a complete maze, but it is beautifully preserved, it was everything the Red Fort in Delhi should have been
If you want you can either walk or get an elephant ride to the fort, not the main fort though, we walked up the path, it was pretty steep, but not hot enough yet for us to wish we had used the elephant (I have ridden them before, so it wasn’t anything missed)
We bought a big ticket that allows us to see other places as well, seemed a money saver, even though we aren’t here long enough to see much, just one whole day
It took us about 40 minutes to get to the Amber fort, it does look impressive even from a distance and even more so the closer we got
I was looking at it, this place must have been awful to assault, there is just no where to make a bridgehead and it is walls within walls, even with cannon (of the day) it would have been very costly in men, just think of the PBI trying to get up to this place, clad in a heavy woollen red coat, muzzle loading muskets and bayonets (even Arthur Wellesley would have had 2nd thoughts about cracking this place)
But it would need a lot to defend it as well, even if they had a man every 10 yards, they would have needed thousands to man the walls, then in case of a siege, they would have to feed and water the inhabitants
It was only ever attacked once, and that failed, but all you ne3ed to do is look at the photos and you will see why, but this place is everything that a national treasure should be, bright, full of colour, information
I can’t describe it all; I just hope the photos do it justice
We then went on to Gaitor
This is a funeral ground for rulers and rajahs of Jaipur
The carvings and buildings are in a fantastic condition, but it seems there is very little information about it and people have forgotten it, but it’s really beautiful to see, the carving work and buildings are really good and the reliefs brilliant, but as there is no information all I could do was take photos, a real shame, I’d like to have known more about it
Still I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I did just walking around taking them
We then had a quick look round the astronomical museum, it was just too hot to spend much more time out here
I found another Ambassador, but this was a real posh one, with the number plate 000 1 on it, lovely nick
when it cools down this evening, we are going to see the Wind Palace (I will do a sepearate entry for that, as the power has gone off now

Those ambassadoors last longer as they don't rust as much there as in UK. Nice condition that one.
Some really good pictures there Del- As you say the fort is in escellent condition- I just look at the pictures you send, and it gets harder to understand how the class system is obviously more evident in this country- I can never understand so little for many, so much for so few.
The Observatory pictures are great, too.
Thanks for letting me 'travel' with you.
Hi Derrick and thanks for sharing all this. It is another interesting entry that travelled me while having a break...Looking forward for the next.
Great pictures
The buildings appear to be in good condition.
What an amazing lifestyle the rulers from that time period must have enjoyed.
Maybe the PBI would have had a tough job getting in, but I bet Richard Sharpe would have found a way.
Amazing Photo's an Dialogue Derrick mate as u say its a pity the red fort was not as well looked after. love reading your travels mate
