The day dawned grey and muggy, with rain promised for later. The wind was a gentle F2 / 3 from the NE and once through the Enkhuizen lock for the last time, we were able to sail gently the 17 miles to Den Oever. It was a pleasant sail, not many boats about but zillions of flies to keep us company. Happily, we have yet to encounter a blood sucking one so apart from being unsightly on our white sails and boat, they don't do any harm. Whilst not exactly zillions, we certainly saw a few hundred birds feasting excitedly on some hapless fish – I have never seen so many cormorants in one place!

Den Oever is situated at the north-western corner of the Ijsselmeer and the Afsluitdijk (ie the main dyke that separates the fresh water of the Ijsselmeer from the saline Waddenzee)terminates here. The marina is on the Ijsselmeer side, so no lock had to be negotiated and we were safely in our mooring 'box’ (2 poles and a pontoon at the bow) by 13:45. By now it was raining intermittently but undaunted, we got our bikes out and rode the 3km into town. It is a tiny little place, not unattractive but not that photogenic either, especially in the grey conditions. We didn’t tarry, did a bit of shopping and then got back to the boat, and soon after the rain started in earnest.

Before I close on the day, a quick word on the fridge. I had been assured by de Gier that it was working normally (but they would say that wouldn’t they!) but call me an old cynic, but I wanted a second opinion. I called the technical helpline of the manufacturer in the UK and after numerous attempts, each time costing god knows what, I finally got to talk to a real person rather than a computer. He assured me that it was working according to specification and that I wasn’t to worry, so subject of the fridge in this blog is (hopefully) forever closed.
