9/28/09

On Saturday we're on the road in our rental before 6 am, destination: Irina’s place in Goleta. Drive down the coast – breakfast in Monterey, mist on the ocean and along the coast, glimpses of enchanting views. Big Sur. Surfers. Cyclists, lots of cyclists. Sea Lions. At Irina’s, an abundant feast awaited us: all our favorite flavors – cheese and tomatoes, basil and garlic, olive oil, bread, olives, mushrooms. Walk on the nearby beach, clean up the coal oil stuck on our feet. Fish for dinner in Santa Barbara near the marina.

Sunday – Danish-themed town of Solvang, then Santa Ynez valley and the Gainey vineyards. Great garden and vine-covered patio with a huge grill (both Victor and Javier were interested in the grill area and how the lift gears worked). Lingering smells from the food cooked earlier opened our appetites, as did the wonderful syrah we tasted later as Victor guided us through the various wines. Picnic lunch on a beach near Goleta, where we traded the harsh, hot sun of the valley for the misty cool air near the waves.

Irina has a class today, so we will pick her up before noon and head for the beach in Santa Barbara to grill some burgers, and just lie around and do nothing. We hope for sunshine, but will enjoy the day regardless. All we really need or want at this point in our lives is good company and great conversation, laughter, wine and good food! Already we are sad as we realize that tomorrow we will be leaving this beautiful area and this lovely girl as we head back to the Bay Area with Javi.
