Rick & Linda's

Just a few miles north of Fort St. John we arrived at Charlie Lake, where we finally met Victor's second cousin Rick and his lovely family - Linda, warm and intelligent, and their beautiful daughters Gillian and Meagan. This, then, is the purpose of our long journey north into the oil and gas country of Canada, through some of the most stunning views of the Rockies we could have imagined, and one of the windiest ice storms we've ever experienced. Here, overlooking the Peace River, enjoying their warm and welcoming home, we finally meet this man with whom we've corresponded sporadically over the last 30 years. The connection is immediate, the similarities and humor and attitudes all click and it feels as if we've known each other forever. We are included in their weekend activities, dining al fresco with friends celebrating birthdays, enjoying stimulating conversation, delicious goulash prepared by Harald and Helen, and wonderful wine. What a satisfying and heartening thing it is to find people with rich, creative, full lives who are curious and interested in the world around them, and are articulate in expressing views and opinions, and are involved in their communities. As we are welcomed in this beautiful home decorated with love of indigenous crafts and art, we are embraced by their open affection and immediate acceptance. We have left Charlie Lake enamored of the geography and the warmth of its people, a fascinating mix of cultures, nationalities, and interests, feeling totally connected to this family after only a day and a half in their company.
