In the years that followed, fewer people seemed to go out to forage in this way. Supermarkets came to Methoni and youngsters knew less about wild food. However, this year especially there seems to be renewed interest, even to the extent that I see more goats and chickens in gardens. If this is what the recession has brought then it is not altogether a bad thing. Our world benefits from sensible, sustainable agriculture and I think it gives pleasure too, so long as life does not get too tough!
So I was pleased when friends took me in their car to the Lamda grove - helpful to me as it is quicker by car and I can learn; helpful to them because they can collect horta.
We went out mid morning and I was delighted to be able to walk along the borders of the grove, admiring the flowers and being shown the edible greens. The stream was flowing very quickly and I noted that the old well, always dry in the past, as it had silted up over the years, also had water in.
Coffee at the nearest coffee shop was also on the agenda, and it was good to see my friends meeting old acquaintances and catching up on news, as I listened and tried to improve my Greek.
