So in short...
I will be taking a three month sabbatical from my job as a Clinical Social Worker in the Washington, DC area to travel to Peru. The first five weeks will be spent in Cusco, living with a host family. The first half of each day I will be taking intensive Spanish classes, and the second half doing volunteer week at a local organization. After that, David, my boyfriend, is coming down for two weeks which we will spend traveling and then ultimately finish our trip in Arequipa...where I will stay and spend the following six weeks doing more volunteer work/language classes.

So in long...A great deal of preparation has gone into this trip over the past few years really. I have known for a while that I wanted to travel to a Central/South American country for a few months to study the language and culture. The past few years since I finished grad school I have been working for a a large non-profit in the DC area...and I realized fairly quickly to work in the social work field in this area it is almost critical to speak Spanish and have a better understanding of Latin American culture. So if you know me at all, you know I have spent countless hours Google-ing where I should go and what exactly I should do. I chose Peru for a few different reasons, one big one being thats its summer there right now, the others being that I read/heard that it is good place to learn Spanish with a neutral accent and there is a great deal to see. And I knew I could talk David into coming to visit since its one of few places that he has not yet been.
So after many long days this week finishing up countless work obligations and finishing with all of my client's...I leave from DC tomorrow and fly from New York-Lima, and then I have an early morning flight to Cusco.
In the meantime I will continue to google random info about Peru and terrify myself with things like photos of scary toilets and South American bacterial infections that cause you to lose your limbs.
