Friday morning we drove out Normandy to see Juno Beach, Omaha Beach, the American Cemetery and Memorial, and an area with remnants of German bunkers from the D-Day invasion of WWII.
It was a long day, as always when doing something like this because of how much emotion and energy it takes out of you. The first place we were was the German bunkers. It really hits you as you walk through and see the semi-dismantled weapons and bunkers, but even more noticeable was the craters spread across the entire area of land. We walked along this area and Juno Beach before driving down to Omaha Beach which is home to the America Cemetery and Memorial. We had a tour guide at the Memorial where we saw a movie that gave the stories of some of the men buried in the cemetery and then he walked us through the cemetery and the memorial. It was really emotional especially with some of the stories he shared with us. After our tour, we were invited to be part of the flag lowering ceremony with a group of boy scouts from an American base in Germany. I thought it was pretty cool that we can say we were a part of that.
