Sunday night blended into Monday morning for us. Fortunately, Walter & Elka were generous enough to include us in an existing reservation their car company had, so we got to ride to the airport instead of taking the train. This meant though that we left at 1:20am, so we chose not to go to bed and instead napped in the airport and on the flight. This might be why it seemed to be such a quick trip and we were in Crete before we knew it! The plane landed and taxied to a spot on the runway, where we disembarked onto a bus for a short ride to the terminal. When we left Germany it was the middle of the night and raining, so that meant that stepping off the plane in jeans and sweatshirts in Crete we were a little warm. We were ok with it though, an easy fix. We didn't spend much time in Crete's capital city before boarding a bus headed west to the small town of Rethymno, where we were set to spend the next couple of days. It was beautiful when we arrived, and hasn't changed since. The main beach is incredible and stretches literally as far as the eye can see, dotted with umbrellas and beach chairs which can be rented for the day. We spent the rest of our afternoon exploring the old town and the port and scouting a place for dinner later. Our dinner was interesting to say the least, we settled on a quiet garden restaurant tucked deep inside the old town. It was nearly deserted when we arrived and we have since realized it was because nobody here eats dinner before 9 or 10 at night so we were quite obviously tourists having dinner at 7. The waiter stood nearby throughout dinner and we still aren't sure if this is normal for the culture or if he literally had nothing else to do that early in the night. He was very friendly though and at the end of the meal brought us two shots of ouzo and a vanilla panacotta for dessert. It was the perfect way to finish off the meal and the ouzo sent us off with a kick! We walked for a while after dinner, as much because we were full as to enjoy the last of the beautiful sunset. It was then that we noticed restaurants starting to fill up, so now we know for the future!

I'm all caught up. Sounds like you had the true Ludwigshafen experience, sit back and go along for the ride. Fun for all.

Yay for Crete! Looks like you guys are a lot warmer than it is here. We're experiencing 'June-uary' here, so the big, long beach looks very inviting!
Stoked to see you when you get back. :-)
