Thursday was spent touring the city by bus and on foot. We started off the day meeting in the restaurant of our hotel for a huge German breakfast and then set out towards to the city center to buy tickets for a bus tour which Amy and James had done before. We had a little time to kill before the bus got to our stop so Dad and James scouted out a café nearby while the rest of us looked at dirndls (Bavarian-style dress) and lederhosen at a nearby shop. Amy was considering buying a traditional Bavarian outfit and she wanted to try some on to figure out the right size. When the bus arrived, we hopped aboard and headed for our first stop, Schloss Nymphenburg. It was built in 1664 for Bavarian royalty and still today the royal family retains private apartments in the castle. It features a botanical garden, royal carriage museum, and one of the oldest porcelain factories in Europe, established in 1747. From here, we continued the bus tour past the BMW museum and the Olympic park to the English Gardens. A short walk through town brought us to the Hofgarten where we stopped for a drink in an old biergarten just off the main road. We learned that biergartens started long ago when there was no system of cooling the huge tanks of beer. The Germans decided to bury the tanks underground and then planted large shade trees above them to keep the ground cool. People followed the beer, bringing seating and food, and thus biergartens were born. It started to rain shortly after leaving the Hofgarten so we made our way back under covered awnings toward our hotel, stopping to peruse the shops along the way and picking up some snacks to hold us until dinner. For habenessen (dinner) we met James' cousin Christine at a great local restaurant she picked out. The food, and of course the beer, was delicious. There were many dumplings of all colors and sizes, roasted pork and duck and cheese spatzle (which is similar to mac & cheese but wonderfully seasoned) and everyone left stuffed for the walk back to our hotel.
