Flag of Portugal  , Azores,
Saturday, May 14, 2011

Of course we also had our one stop in Ponta Delgada, Azores which is a Portuguese island off the coast of Spain. We thoroughly enjoyed our day there spending it wandering around the downtown area and listening to many of the local live performances throughout the town as well as window shopping up and down the cobble stone streets. When we arrived there was a crafts fair going on with little white tents all over town. These tents housed local merchants and their creations and we enjoyed looking at all the items along with purchasing a few. I think one of the most impressive was an older man who was making baskets. We spent some time watching his as he sat on the floor and held the beginnings of a basket between his feet while he wove the reeds together with record speed. Derek also went inside the local fort which overlooked the port and spent time taking in the impressive collections of military clothing and artillery. It seems only fitting as we have been going I forts all over the US to add a European one to our repertoire. Towards the end of the afternoon a series of marching bands who came in to town. They were much more formally dressed than one might expect and all played beautiful if not slightly different music which was certainly different than the local dancers we had watched in the square earlier.
