Another lazy day spent in the sun and enjoying the warm weather and perfect breeze. Derek was able to start and finish an entire Gregor book today and we took in some of the natural beauty that isn't hard to find on the island. This evening we headed downtown to visit some of the known sites on our way to the Sunset Celebration, a local art show hat takes place nightly. We stopped by the Southernmost point in the Continental United Stated (Ka Lae, Hawaii is further south) and took some pictures before strolling by Earnest Hemingway's House. The house was built in 1851 and became Ernest Hemingway's home in 1931. It was much larger than I had expected and really a beautiful home. While Hemingway's house was large and impressive it fit in with the other achitecture of the area. I'm not sure that we knew what to expect when we got here but the small and not-so-small beach style homes are really beautiful and interesting to look at with their large beams and wrap around sun porches. The streets were littered with chickens and roosters, another unexpected addition
but after our iguana run in earlier today it seems like animals are
just a part of this trip regardless. After that we headed for Mallory Square for a little window shopping on our way to the Sunset Celebration which takes place on the Mallory Square Dock. We enjoyed strolling up and down the main drag taking in all the local flavor: bars, live music, many everything-$5 stores and small eateries. We stopped at a small walk up place that looked seriously local and as we enjoyed our Conch Fritters and Fries along with a little people watching we were content. We had already done a walk-by of the offerings on Mallory Dock so we found our favorites and did a little shopping and watched some of the local performers before taking in the 8pm sunset and heading back to camp.
