What would you do if you saw a body laying in the middle of this road?

It is late at night on a very remote and dark spur off of the highway. This part of Brazil is rough and we just need a place to stop the car. We head for the coast to sleep by the beach if at all possible.

Hours behind the wheel this day produced a kind of trance..which is broke in an instant when our headlights reveal the body of a man and his bike laying in the middle of this secluded cut in the forest. Instant instinct causes a swerve to just miss this person which nearly puts us off the road. We are lucky to avoid him as he is only a couple of feet in front of us when we are first able to spot this tragedy in the middle of our lane.

The internal debate - stop and try to help or keep rolling, hoping someone else will. It is complicated. Without a phone or Portuguese skills, there isnīt much we can do. However, a body is laying in the road and the "right" thing to do is stop and try something. Among the complications are the many stories we have heard about robbery set-up that begin with a roadside plea for help...then, upon stopping, the strike takes place.

So many thoughts fly in this moment. Shock. The sight of this body produces many emotions and a cause for reflection and appreciation of what it means to not be dead.
