I crossed Thorung La with two other friends I met: Aussie Brent and English Matt, both chefs and both a cracking laugh.
We then said goodbye to Florian and walked the much less travelled 'other' side. A road has been built over the last few years which puts most walkers off but we found exciting detours and alternative routes and nearly avoided the road altogether for the next week or so.
We wondered through villages, monasteries, found fossils in a riverbed, bathed in hot springs and almost visited an ice fall. We reached the top of this mega climb just as the clouds set in around lunchtime and spoiled the chance of seeing it up close. Didn't spoil our day though.
Some of the lodges heat the dinning rooms by putting glowing charcoal under the table or even a full on kerosene hob cooker! No danger there then.
I've put a picture of a Dal Bhat, this was a particularly nice one, it's really cheap and tasty, but the best thing... you get endless refils! I surprised most lodge owners with my abilities in this respect, to the point that some thought I'd given it away and not eaten it all :) Oh look I've put the picture in twice, but in fact I had three helpings of this particular one.
