I was tossing around a couple possible options for a title of this entry, and had first thought of "Sleepless in San Juan".........due to the fact the rainy (stormy) season has arrived, and we have experienced some form of power outage every night. I can't begin to tell you how difficult it is to sleep when the power goes out!! There is no air movement at all, and the rooms heat up to over 90 degrees in a very short time! It gets really hard to breathe, not to mention everything in the fridge spoils!! Still, it's a small price to pay for travelling to a quaint little beach town in southern Nicaragua. I wouldn't change a thing :-)
Over the years I have witnessed a lot of electrical storms, however what I watched for about 5 hours over the skies on San Juan last night was nothing short of spectacular!
The action started shortly after sunset, with the power going off around 8 ish, there was plenty of lightning, but no rain. It was a type of lightning I had never seen before ,with several bursts of super bright light continually through the night. It wasn't like the standard bolt of lightning, followed by a loud crack of thunder. It was also very different from the usual "sheet lightning". I went on Google this morning to see if I could determine an explanation. The only thing that was even remotely close was this...........
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catatumbo_lightning

According to the Wikipedia site, this only happens in Venezuela.........hmmmm, I have never been there, but I also know I have never seen anything similar, and it sure looked like Catatumbo lightning to me???

So tonight just after sunset the storms started rolling in over the water. I have my camera in hand, just in case I am able to capture a shot ( few people do) I'm a little bit nervous after my near death lightning experience in Quito, however if I feel all my hair stand up again.....I'll make sure to hit the dirt!!

This was last nights sunset........who knew ?

Definitely stormy looking clouds tonight!

Eh. That lightning you are describing is just a little bit too skeery for me - I would be cowering under the bed (along with the geckos and cockroaches no doubt) - rather than have to deal with that kind of extreme weather - give me good old boring and predictable (but safe!) warm wet Vancouver any day - hope yr 'rainy' season ends soon though - no end in sight to it up here! Sigh.

Yep, it was really bizarro lightning for sure. It makes the evening interesting though ! We don't miss the dismal weather in Vancouver, and can deal with a few electrical storms anytime. Today is beautiful & sunny, about 88 degrees, with a lovely ocean breeze........
