Here we are safely back in Vancouver. We had a fairly uneventful trip home,Back in Feb. when we first arrived in Managua,it was after 9:00 pm and we did not see any of the airport because everything was closed. On this trip home we were flying out at noon, so had lots of time to check it out. I was so impressed with the terminal.

The upgrade is quite new,and it is a world class airport. Inside the main terminal there are dozens of beautiful new shops, and about 6 different duty frees . I was not able to bring home any rum, however the coffee was plentiful, and between $6.00-$8.00 for a pound of coffee beans. If you live in Canada and you are flying home from Nicaragua via the U.S. forget about taking any alcohol with you in your carry-on.!!I I stopped at the duty free shop in the Managua airport, picked up 2 -40 pounder's of Flor de Cana Rum, only to be told I had to put it in my checked bags, which was kinda silly, cuz first you check your bags, then go through customs, and then duty free on your way to the departure gate.Oh well, a good lesson learned. So enough with my preamble. As my title states, broccoli and two ply t.p. are about the only things I missed while I was in Nicaragua. No I did NOT have to "drip dry", there was plenty of toilet paper in SJdS, however the entire country has a rather fragile septic/sewer system, so the t.p. is a little different. Then there is the broccoli.I did come across some while in SJdS, however it is grown a bit differently than in North America, and it looks nothing like the broccoli we grow here.Nicaragua has so many other great fruits and veggies. The avocados are three times the size of any I have seen in Canada! I just returned from our local SaveOn foods weekly shop, and I was really disappointed with the produce here after buying such nice fresh aromatic vegs and fruits in the SJdS markets. It will be a period of adjustment for sure.
So by my calculations, we only have about 305 days until we are able to return to Nicaragua
I am happy that I took the time to document our trip to San Juan del Sur, and I am sure I will log in often to reminisce about our amazing adventure ! Thank you to all who followed my blog. I really enjoyed hearing from everyone we met along the way, and those of you who have accidentally discovered my ramblings.Until next year "Adios muchacho's"

dee and ross, glad you made it home ok. the airport has improved alot over the years!
i thought the broccoli we had in SJDS was pretty good. remember, in the states, don't know about canada, but most of our veggies and fruits are genetically modified. none of that in nica land! take care, kim and clay

Hi Dee,

I am one of those who accidentally stumbled across your blog and I am so happy that I did. My family and I are going to SJDS this April for only one week and your blog here gave us tons of pointers as to what to do and where to eat. We are so looking forward to our vacation and are so grateful for all of your tips.

P.S. We are from Ontario so I'll be sure to get my fill of broccoli before we head over there!

Hi Anne,
Thanks so much for your kind words. You and your family will see what I have been talking about when you arrive in SJdS.It is "all that" and then some. I have been home for almost a month now, and I sure miss it. Have a good time, and when you get the chance, let me know what you thought.Enjoy yourselves!
Dee
