If you saw my post from Super Bowl Sunday, then you remember that Ross and I watched the game from Big Wave Dave's.Just before the game we entered a football pool.
We made a $100 cordoba ($5.00) contribution,and discovered today that we had won third place prize of $1000 cordoba( $50.00) I know , you are thinking the game was like so last week, but remember this is Nicaragua and it is a very laid back lifestyle, so things happen ,when they happen.After we collected our winnings we decided to do a little shopping for some t-shirts.There are plenty of shops all over SJDS,and prices for most souvenirs are quite reasonable.A few things I have learned since arriving in Nicaragua are #1) Take the time to learn some Spanish,this isn't like Mexico.Most if not all of the local people here speak no English.Tomorrow Ross and I are getting a Spanish tutor, she comes right to our hotel for 2 hours a day, twice per week.So after 5 weeks we should do a bit better than we have been.#2) Do not depend on the barter system while in Nicaragua,again this is not like Mexico.The people here are very poor, and they do work hard for what little money they make. I was told on average, a local Nicaraguan may make $7.00 per day. So if you see something you must buy, be kind, be gracious, and pay the asking price.
#3) Do not forget your sunscreen!!! repeat, Do not forget your sunscreen. We are so close to the Equator,the sun here is very intense. I went and did the pre tan thingy before I arrived.HA! didn't help.Lastly, buy a hat, you need a hat.

I know! They are so beautiful. Depending on the artist they ask about $10.00 U.S. Megan has already put dibs on the first one I posted,so I am going to bring as many back as I can fit in my carry-on bag. There are different animals like humming birds, turtles, myna birds,gecko's.... any preference??
