I had another successful two days off.
Friday, I tagged a long with a bunch of guys from the hostel and we hit up the beach. I am happy to say that I have had my first proper swim in New Zealand waters! (The quick dunk under in August, yup, winter, and snorkeling in a wetsuit don't cut it as proper in my books!). It was slightly chilly, but I guess considering that it is January, it was pretty damn good! Once you got moving anyways it was all sweet.

Yesterday was the Wellington Cup Carnival, which is a huge party day at the horse races. It's an excuse for all the girls (ok, guys too) to get dolled up to extremes, complete with hats and/or feather hairpieces, and dresses or skirts. I went with Sarah, one of the girls I met while staying in Auckland around Fiji time, and some of her friends (and their friends!). We took the train, to Trentham which is about an hour from Wellington.

Anyways, it was a gorgeous day, the downside being it is a massively popular event with HUGE queues (sorry, line-ups!), involving people at the back seeming to think it will make things move faster if they crush everyone at the front together so much that you cannot move at all. Stu, Matt and Dave (currently and formerly of Wellywood) were also there, so I went and met up with them as well. They convinced me it was in the spirit of the day to place a bet on the main event, so after perusing the race guide, I decided on two horses: the "favourite", Pasta Post (I figured this was also appropriate for a backpacker), and then one more personal: Young Centaur. Considering the symbol for Sagittarius is a centaur, and I have one tattooed onto my back that is indeed young, I thought that this was a surefire thing and an excellent way to bet. I put $10 on both horses, 5 each way. (Which I learned means two bets: on the win, and on placing.)

Anyways. Lo and behold, Young Centaur won the race! And the fave didn't even place. I was chuffed (that's right, chuffed!) when I handed in the winning ticket and got $57 for my good betting strategy! A $37 profit! Nice, considering I've never bet on anything in my life.

Anyways, the downside was, it seems the whole town was in party mode last night, and making it through (and obtaining some sleep in the process) was a test in endurance. Like when one girl in my room came in at 4:30, slamming the door and knocking over the milk crates containing LOTS of toiletries, which conveniently landed in my open purse, which I had to dig through to get my stuff out at 6 in the morning to get ready for work. SO needless to say, I can imagine what it would be like to work hungover on no sleep for a 12.5 hour shift, and it will NEVER happen. I'm going to crash SOON!

Well, another day ay to survive tomorrow (that should be fun), then only 6 shifts left there ever! Sweet! Also, everything is sorted and I'll be receiving all the back pay shortly... AND I got my cheque for the refund on the GST I had to pay on my laptop. Awesome!!
