To Seattle

Distance Traveled:            214 Miles

Travel Time:                        5 Hours

Arrival Time:                        5 PM (Pacific)

Best:                        Seeing Rick and Kim

Worst:                        Falling near the tide pools

Unexpected:            Learning that the city of Forks lies

Due to my miscalculation of time yesterday, the plan was to go to downtown Port Angeles (Twilight stuff), Tide pools (because we missed them in Oregon), Forks (also Twilight) and then take a hike in Olympic National Park. We got up early and drove into Port Angeles trying to find the items listed on a Twilight scavenger hunt we obtained.  We found the bookstore listed, but questioned whether it was the one from the movie.  We took pictures anyway.

Next up was tide pools at Salt Creek National Recreation area.  The deputy mayor of Port Angeles was down there and we had a nice conversation.  He pointed out the three sea lions that were playing along the beach.  We would never have seen them if he didn't  point them out.  He also pointed out to us the eagles that were flying around.  Even thought these birds are enormous, they looked like standard fare until I really looked.  We watched one swoop down and grab a fish from the water and fly up into a tree.

Mr. Deputy mayor also told us where the tide pools were – at the end of the point.  We had fun climbing on the rocks that were covered in barnacle and clams.  Kelly, surprisingly, was afraid.  She said it was because she didn’t want to kill anything.  We saw numerous crabs and hermit crabs, snails and a few things we didn’t recognize.  We decided to venture out to the tide pools.  It took us a long time to get out there, because we didn’t want to step on anything.  By the time we got out there, we were stepping on the clams and seaweed without a care.  I felt very agile and was excited that my feet didn’t hurt.  I got a little too excited by trying to whip around a huge rock….lost my footing and fell into the water…in white pants!  Cut my hand and arm on the barnacle, but survived nonetheless.  In the tide pools we saw a few star fish and some purple sea urchins.  That was about it.  But we did it!

We drove through Olympic Park on our way to Forks, with plans to stop on the way back towards Seattle.

When we got to Forks, our first stop was the Forks High school, which to our dismay was being torn down.   Near the high school, Miss Twilaholic wanted to stop at a Twilight store.  Before we went in, I asked a man who lived in the town why they were tearing down the school and he said "Because it needed it."  He also told us that NONE of the movies were filmed in Forks.  Apparently the state of Washington wanted money to film there.  So, the moviemakers went elsewhere. (Good thing we stopped at locations near Portland!)  The only thing they did was take stills of the outside of the High school (signs) and the hospital (signs).  So, the tour was of FAKE things that WERE NOT in the movie.  The town is really cashing in on this by not being totally honest about this.  They have a “Belle” car in front of the Chamber of Commerce.  It is not the car from the movie.  They talk about the “Cullen” house and Belle’s house and the police station, etc….FAKE!!!!  We were so appalled that we took a few pictures and blew fast out of town.  A little girls (OK, big teenager) heart crushed!

It was getting pretty late now, so I was afraid to venture on a hike not knowing how long it would take.  We were 2 miles from Seattle.  This day we needed to get there for sure, since the rest of our happy family was arriving….so….we skipped the hike in Olympic.  So sad for me, because that is why we came.  But, I realize it can’t be about me.

We arrived in Seattle long enough to get dinner and unpack.  Then Rick and Kim texted us that they had arrived.  It’s nice to have the family together!
