To Port Angeles

Distance Traveled:           527 Miles

Travel Time:                     11 Hours

Arrival to Dest.            8:06 PM (Pacific)

Best:  Mt. St. Helens

Worst:  Not being able to get to a Taco Bell that I could see (so Grace of all people) could pee.  We could see it, but the roads were so hard to maneuver and there were no right turns, no left turns and I had to turn around about five times to finally pull through another parking lot and into the street I needed to go to.

Unexpected: No Welcome sign upon entry to Washington.  All the other states were happy to see us.  In fact, Oregon said "Thanks for coming, hope to see you soon!" as we left.

Today we ventured into Washington State for an extremely long drive.  When I planned the trip, I never took into consideration that we were stopping at Mt. St. Helens on the way up to Port Angeles.  The trip to Mt. St. Helens added at least four hours to the drive, making what I thought was a six hour drive 10 hours + stop time.

Mt. St Helens still shows the devastation after 30 years.  It was amazing to see the trees that have been destroyed.  It was also good to see that vegetation is finally growing.  (We went to the north side that was not replanted.)

We were unable to determine where the mountain was.  When we were taking videos, I think we were saying that about 5 peaks was the mountain.  Luckily, when I pulled off to a parking area, a nice gentlemen that lives in the area pointed out the mountain to us—not even close to where we were looking.  To our credit, you could not see it because of the rain and clouds.  (Surprise, rain in Washington.)

The roads were REALLY winding and it made the trip even longer.  I actually thought we weren't going to make it to our destination today.

We did arrive and the Koa is pretty nice, but we won’t get to enjoy because we got here late and will be getting up early tomorrow.  We are going to try to catch some tide pools and then go off to Forks for a Twilight scavenger hunt.  Then, if we have time, we will do a short hike into Olympic National Park before heading in to Seattle to meet the rest of the family.  Yep.  I miss them.
