We contracted a driver for the day, Wayan, through the
hotel, and he drove us to the Batik factory, silver factory where jewelry was
purchased, wood carvings, and then to lunch in Ubud at a little cafe. Sam was
still not 100%, but almost! We got to purchase rambutams, bintang t-shirts in
bad taste alley, Vick got t shirts for Richard, Dad and Jason before the skies
opened up and we took refuge by huddling under a verandah of a book store for
40 mins till Vick (with only a hand towel for protection) made a dash for our
pre- arranged meeting place with Wayan, our driver.
It became obvious that the rest of would need to leave
the verandah, so I then left the safety of the verandah, found a shop
person taking full advantage of monsoon weather and poorly prepared tourists,
haggled for umbrellas and bought the last 2 umbrellas and a cheap poncho she
had, at inflated prices and went back to collect Sam and Darryl from the
verandah and we went and found Vicki who had found the driver. It was a very
busy Ubud street, which Vick crossed on her own - an achievement she is proud
to be able to tell the tale of!!
We made it safely back to the hotel, had peppermint tea
in the dining room and tried to update face book of our adventure.
Unfortunately the wifi system is struggling with the demands, so it is a bit
hit and miss. I finally left the ipad and when I looked out to the
ocean saw the most amazing cloud formations with the setting sun somewhere
behind them and had a feast of a time taking photographs!!
For dinner we went to a little cafe in Candidasa, where we enjoyed the
food, but not to the calibre of Vincent's and we enjoyed a long traditional
Balinese dance from a young girl of about 12. Sam still on the improve, but not
quite there yet.
