You know, the Flying J was not that bad... until some asshole decided to stop for a quick 40 winks, lined up with the rest of us, only he elected not to turn off his diesel engine... So there we are, ready to hit the hay and the carbon monoxide monitor goes BERSERK!

Sure would have been nice if he'd parked back with the big rigs who were all doing the same instead of with us RVs and horse trailers with our windows down! So, everybody kinda waits to see if this is gonna last all night, and after about 20 minutes, around 11pm, everybody decides to find a different place to spend the night b/c it's late and the guy clearly isn't going anywhere... well, the mass exodus causes quite a traffic jam. I run over to secure a row of parking spaces next to a field at the edge of the lot, figuring we could park with one side of Bokeh's windows away from the exhaust fumes... I'm watching it all go down and see more trucks pullin' in and I get ALL panicked we're gonna get stuck having to sleep inhaling exhaust fumes... Meanwhile, Chris is trying to figure out how he's gonna break free from the pack. I'm yelling across the parking lot, he's ignoring me (because I'm yelling), I think he can't hear me, I yell louder... anyone wanna take a guess where this is going?

Rather than get "into it," I just go to sleep. Until 3:30am that is... I wake up and can NOT get back to sleep. The worst part is, I am so confused as to what time it is, I think it's 4:30, and I'm adding it up, thinking, five hours sleep - not great, but okay... Well, actually, I went to bed at 12, not 11, and got up at 3:30, not 4:30, so I don't figure this out until I've been up and caffeineating for at least two hours....

Now, before I go any further, let me state for the record that I WARNED HIM I WAS TIRED!!! I even said, "I can't be held responsible for my actions today, okay?

We left the Flying J mid-morning, in search of a corner... yeah, we found one ;-)

Granted, there was no girl in a flatbed Ford, but, but, but... and I am here to tell you, the time/date stamp on the above picture is 10:44:31 AM. The picture was taken at Exit XX. If you look at a map, you will see, your honor, that due to our average travel speed of 35mph, we were in fact, still within the city limits of Winslow, AZ at 10:55:15 AM when this photo was taken:

How 'bout them apples? Of course, me being anal-retentive, I googled "Standing on the Corner" and "Winslow, Arizona" after the fact and to my chagrin, we missed quite a unique Roadside America landmark in our haste to beat feet to the Grand Canyon:

"Standin' on the Corner Park"

I did not know Jackson Browne wrote the song!

Anyhoo, so off we go... to the Grand Canyon... I didn't know we were going there but hey, as long as we have time, I am all about it. Of course, since I didn't know about it, I didn't make reservations. No worries, we'll stay at the no-hookup campground. Did I mention it's colder and much much much windier?

The Grand Canyon is definitely awesome, in the true sense of the word... but the haze over it created by pollution coming from Los Angeles and Las Vegas is really depressing ;-(

And, for those of you who know the "Thorofare Breakdown" story, let's say it wasn't *THAT* bad, but it was close... I'll just leave it at that, and say that I believe I've figured out the war between the sexes.... my people deal with men daily, and in exchange, men deal with my people once a month. I guess it really does balance out ;-)

Things we LOVE
Teddy Roosevelt for having the foresight to set aside land for national parks

Things we HATE
Pollution and PMS
