Yesterday, after we finished at REI, we were going to stop at the Fourbucks around the corner (stay with me, there's a point to this...) but decided to go to Wild Oats and get some non-freeze dried foods since we now know the fridge is working very well on the propane, regardless of being hooked-up (in fact, with the temperature change, we actually had to lower it from where we had it set while in the South) and we figured there had to be a Fourbucks near there, given the demographic of Wild Oats' clientele, right? Well there wasn't.

Had we actually gone to the Fourbucks by REI when we were there, however, we would have done what we always do when we stop in a town we need to shoot someone in, and ask, "hey, do you know of any Katrina evacuees around here?" And had we done that, the guy behind the register would have said, "well, yeah, me!"

Instead, we did a white pages search on a lead I found about a guy who used to work at Fourbucks in Mandeville, LA and was offered a job by Fourbucks anywhere in the country he wanted to move to... Fourbucks? Giving back? Who knew??? Called the guy, Adam, and he was working yesterday but off today. Score! So off we went, literally into the wild blue yonder... my first time going there, btw (never did understand what that phrase really meant till now!). Great guy, Adam... I was bummed to have missed his fiancÚ, who had two horses, does endurance riding (one of the many things I must do before I die), and is starting a horse rescue organization with her sister! My kinda gal. Their story is a happy one. They've got a nice spread on the edge of BLM land, on the far extreme NW of town, horses in the backyard, dogs on the porch and kittens under the porch and in the yard... in the hour we were there, not one car drove down their street, which, although paved, is surrounded by miles of dirt roads... I was ready to move in!

We packed up the trailer and headed West... our goal was Flagstaff (the clock is ticking... we got to get to Utah!) but as I perused the map and Chris cursed the headwinds and hills that now had us moving about the country at 35mph,

we decided to overnight on a corner in Winslow, AZ... Unfortunately, Winslow, AZ only offered a Flying J truck stop for lodging with internet access, but hey - how bad could it be?? And the payoff... finding a corner in Winslow, AZ to park Chris on, such a fine sight to see... come on everybody, sing it with me while we wait... for a girl, my Lord, in flatbed Ford slowin' down and take a look at he (humor me - 'him' didn't rhyme ;-)
